There are settings on it to where you can adjust the volume, turn the music off and just have the little birdie come out, or you can turn it off to where just the clock keeps time. There's a light sensor on it for nighttime too, just make sure there's no light around it for it to shush when sleeping ;) Very well made and beautiful!
